About Johnny Newman
A 16-year NBA Veteran, Johnny Newman is a three-time All-Star Colonial Athletic Association player. He is also a Virginia Sports Hall of Famer. This Virginia-native made history by leading Richmond’s basketball team, “The Spiders” to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school’s history.
Background
Born in Danville, Virginia, Newman started playing basketball in 10th grade and fell in love with the game. He played for his high school team and convinced his father to allow him to play for the University of Richmond in 1983.
Career
Newman was picked by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1986 NBA draft but was benched his first season. Unhappy with his position at Cavaliers, the 6-foot 7-inches player moved to the New York Knicks where he started the lineup. Newman’s performance led him to other teams like Charlotte, New Jersey, Milwaukee and he eventually left the NBA from Dallas Mavericks in 2002. He ended his career with an impressive 12,740 points and 1,688 assists.
