About Jon Lord
John Douglas Lord was a phenomenal British rock and orchestral composer, “Hammond organist,” and pianist.
He played with several bands such as Santa Barbara Machine Head, Whitesnake, and The Flower Pot Men. He was also the co-founder of the British band Deep Purple.
Background & Early Life
He grew up in Leicester, England. His father was a saxophonist, and as a result, encouraged him in music in his early years. A local teacher was hired to teach him classical piano when he was five years old.
He received his O-level education at Wyggeston Grammar School for boys – where he was pivotal to the school choir with his piano and organ abilities.
Career Highlights
He is famously remembered for co-founding the “Deep Purple” band in 1968.
He was a continuing member of the group from 1968 to 1976. Further, he was also consistent with the group when they revived in 1984 until he left in 2002.
Along with the band, he collaborated to release hit songs and albums that topped many local and international charts. In addition, they sold over 100 million copies of records worldwide.
Recognitions
He received an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Leicester. He was in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a distinguished fellow of Stevenson College.
