About Jones Very
Jones Very was an American poet and writer whose works were influenced by William Shakespeare. From 1838 to 1840, Very, who was said to be a member of the Transcendentalism movement, wrote many poems which were published in the Western Messenger. He was best known for his 1839 work entitled “Essays and Poems”.
Though the majority of his works were not collected, the American’s poems were popular among members of the abovementioned movement.
Family
He had five siblings including Lydia Louisa Anna Very, who was also a writer. He was the son of army captain Jones Very.
Education
In 1834, he joined Harvard College. He later enrolled at Harvard Divinity School.
Facts
Very had a close relationship with Ralph Waldo Emerson.
He worked as a cabin boy when he was about eleven years old.
His works were also featured in the James Russell Lowell-edited The Pioneer.
Unfortunately for him, he battled with bipolar disorder.
