About Jordan White
Goaltender Jordan made an interesting ice hockey history with his one-day deal with the San Jose Sharks in 2011.
College Career
While at the University of British Columbia (UBC), he recorded with the UBC Thunderbirds 7 wins and 11 losses for the 2010/2011 season and personally had an 87.6% goal-saving rate.
The One-Day Contract
In the morning of game day January 20, 2011, the Sharks were training ahead of a 7pm match against the Vancouver Canucks when the Sharks's backup goalie, Antero Niittymaki got injured.
News on the situation and lookout for emergency goalie got to Thunderbird’s coach, Milan Dragicevic who called on Jordan to sign the one-day deal with the Sharks.
NHL Rule and Reoccurrence
The National Hockey League (NHL) in a 1965 rule permitted teams who could not afford to keep two or more goaltenders to sign emergency ones when the need be. In most cases, professional leagues could easily fall on the minors for goalies.
In December 2003, Thunderbirds’ goalie signed a similar deal with the Canucks to backup Johan Hedberg in a match against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
