About Jorge Rafael Videla
Jorge Rafael Videla Rodendo was his full name, and he was one of the most revered Argentine military and political leaders in history. He was the commander in chief of the Argentinian army in 1975, and between 1976 and 1981, he was the President of Argentina.
Background & Army Career
He was born in Mercedes, Buenos Aires. In 1942, and at age 17, he joined Argentina’s “National Military College” and graduated as a second lieutenant in 1944. Having served in the military for over three decades, President Isabel Peron appointed him as Argentina’s “General Commander of the Army” in 1975.
Rise to Presidency
On March 24, 1976, Videla led a military junta and coup, which deposed President Isabel Peron. He then formally assumed the office of President of Argentina on March 26, 1976, until March 29, 1981.
His government was responsible for many human rights violations and the “Dirty War” which began as a counter-terrorism effort but culminated in killing many civilians.
Conviction & Death
In 1985, he was charged during the “Trial of the Juntas” with human rights violations and crimes against humanity.
On 5 July 2012, he was sentenced to fifty years imprisonment at the “Marcos Paz” civilian jail. He died on 17 May 2013, aged 87, after falling in the shower while in Prison.
