About Jorge Serrano
Jorge Serrano was the first Protestant president of Guatemala who served from 1991 to 1993 amidst the country’s economic and political issues.
Background
Serrano was born in Guatemala City and graduated from the University of San Carlos of Guatemala with a degree in industrial engineering. He later enrolled at Stanford University and earned his master’s degree in economic development.
Political Career
Born and raised as Catholic, Serrano became an evangelical Baptist in 1975. Back in Guatemala, he joined the Pentecostal Church of the Word, which was headed by Efraín Ríos Montt, who later became president of the country in 1982.
Serrano became Montt’s advisor and headed the Council of State. However, their relationship soured due to their differences, leading Serrano to form the Solidary Action Movement and win the 1991 elections. However, he became unpopular among Guatemalans after he was accused of human rights abuses and corruption. He was overthrown in 1993 and fled to Panama.
