About Joris Mathijsen
Joris Mathijsen is a former Dutch defender who played for the Netherlands national team from 2004 – 2012. He also played for clubs such as AZ and Hamburger SV. He made an appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted in South Africa as well as the UEFA Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.
Career
Mathijsen began his playing career as a young boy at SV VOAB from 1986 – 1989. He later moved to play for Willem II and was promoted to the first team for the 1998-99 season. He continued to play for the next six seasons, making over 120 appearances and scoring about six goals. Willem II manager, Co Adriaanse, sold him to Dutch football club AZ to play for the 2004-06 season. There, he made over 50 appearances and scored a few goals. The center-back player then left for the German club, Hamburger SV on transfer where he played for the next five seasons, making over 140 appearances and scoring more than five goals.
Mathijsen signed a two-year contract with Spanish club Málaga for the 2011 – 12 seasons where he made over 25 appearances. He spent his final 2012-15 seasons playing for the Dutch club Feyenoord, making more than 50 appearances and scoring one goal.
International Tournaments and Career
The player first appeared on the Netherlands national team on November 17, 2004, in a game against Andorra. He made an appearance at the UEFA Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland and was also present at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifying and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, playing in the game that saw the Dutch secure a 2-0 victory over Denmark.
