About Jorma Kaukonen
Jorma Kaukonen was a regular coffee house performer before joining Jefferson Airplane in 1965. As the band’s lead guitarist, he contributed immensely to the recording of some of the group’s successful albums including “Jefferson Airplane Takes Off” and “Long John Silver”.
In 1969, while he was still a member of the aforementioned band, Kaukonen teamed up with Jack Casady to create the music group known as Hot Tuna. Throughout his over five decades with the band, he has helped them to release many albums including their eponymous maiden album and 1975’s “America's Choice”.
Solo career
Described as one of the top guitarists of his generation, the American musician has completed many projects as an independent performer. In 1974, he published his first album which was under the name “Quah”. Some of his other well-known solo albums are titled “Jorma” and “Too Hot to Handle”.
Family
His parents are Jorma Ludwik Kaukonen Sr. and Beatrice Love Levine. He’s the brother of American musician Peter Kaukonen. In 1964, he ended his marriage to Lena Pettersson. He later tied the knot with Vanessa in 1988. He has a son with Stephanie Kearse called Zachary.
Education
He moved to the University of Santa Clara after graduating from Antioch College.
Achievement
In 2016, as part of Jefferson Airplane, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Trivia
He taught guitar at Benner Music Company.
Kaukonen performed with Janis Joplin during the early stages of his career.
He has been named in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists” list.
