About José Antonio Primo de Rivera
José Antonio Primo de Rivera was the originator of the Falange Española political organization which would later be known as Falange Española de las JONS. A trained lawyer, José Antonio, as he was mostly called, was elected to the Republican Cortes in 1933.
He was one of the key figures during the Spanish Civil War which started in 1936. He was arrested for his role in the war and given a death sentence.
Arrest and death
He was grabbed by the government in 1936 and accused of illegally possessing firearms. He was sent to a prison in Alicante. He was later charged with military insurrection and plotting against the government.
Antonio was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to death. His execution was confirmed during the early stages of the war.
Family
His father Miguel Primo de Rivera y Orbaneja was a military leader who ruled Spain between 1923 and 1930. He lost his mother Casilda de Argudín at age five.
Education
The politician attended the University of Madrid where he read law.
Recognition
He was given the Duke of Primo de Rivera title in 1948.
