About José Clemente Orozco
José Clemente Orozco was a famous Mexican caricaturist and painter in the 20th century. He played a significant role in the revival of Mexican political murals in the 1920s and his contributions to the establishment of the “Mexican Mural Renaissance.”
Background & Early Life
The painter was born in Ciudad Guzmán, Mexico. During his childhood, he encountered the Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada, whose artwork inspired him to become a painter. He attended the “Academia de San Carlos” between 1906 and 1910. Unfortunately, at age 21, he lost his left hand while making fireworks with gunpowder.
Major Works & Career Highlights
He began making murals in the 1920s and by 1927, he had earned numerous accolades in Mexico.
From 1927 to 1937, he lived in the United States. In 1930, he painted “Prometheus” (USA’s first modern fresco) for Pomona College. Some of the painter’s most notable murals include “The Epic of American Civilization,” which is housed in Dartmouth College and “Zapata”. Additionally, he also painted massive works for the Museum of Modern Art.
During his later years, he was recognized as a Mexican hero and was honored as a leader who helped raise the country’s art to international eminence.
Death
At 35, José died in his sleep on September 7, 1949 after suffering from heart failure.
