Family Background
He was the son of Jose Martiniano Pereira de Alencar and Ana Josefina de Alencar. The novelist acquired his education at Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Sao Paulo and graduated with a degree in law.
He was married to Georgina Augusta Cochrane and shared two children with her.
As A Novelist
Alencar started his career as a lawyer at a firm near Rio de Janeiro. He became acquainted with writing in 1856 when his friend invited him to write for the Correio Mercantil journal. He also wrote for other journals, including Diário do Rio de Janeiro and Jounal do Commercio.
Beginning his career as a novelist, he first wrote the novel "Cinco Minutos" in 1856. He went ahead to publish other remarkable novels like "A Pata da Gazela'', "O Tronco do Ipê" and " A Guerra dos Mascates''.
Aside from getting attention as a novelist, he also wrote for theatre plays such as "Verso e Reverso '', " O Demônio Familiar" and " As Asas de um Anjo ''.
