About José Martí
Nicknamed “Apostle of Cuban Independence”, José Julián Martí Pérez proved that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.
The journalist, poet, essayist, philosopher and publisher used his writings to shed light on the Cuban bid for political independence from Spain. His writings were published in his own newspapers and other newspapers in the United States and Latin America.
Outside of writing, he was involved in the planning and implementation of the Cuban War of Independence, losing his life during the Battle of Rios. Hence, he has been seen as a martyr for Cuba.
