José Miguel Carrera played a major role in Chile’s fight for independence, eventually becoming the South American country’s first president.
Background
Carrera was born in Santiago to an aristocratic family and attended the Convictorio Carolino. In 1808, Carrera joined the Spanish Army, where he rose to the rank of sergeant major before returning home and getting involved in Chile’s political scene.
Rise to Presidency
The Carrera family led a coup d’état against the Spanish government and Carrera became the president of Chile. During his time, he created the constitution, flag, and introduced the first printing press to the country. After the Spanish invaded Chile, Carrera was forced to live in exile in Argentina, where he helped the country fight against the establishment of a Unitarian government.
Death & Legacy
Carrera was defeated in Argentina and arrested. He was sentenced to death by hanging in 1821. Many Chileans consider him to be one of the Fathers of the Nation.
