About José Sarney
The 31st president of Brazil, José Sarney de Arajo Costa (born José Ribamar Ferreira de Arajo Costa), is a Brazilian politician, attorney, and author. He took office on April 21, 1985 and held the office until March 14, 1990.
Family Life
He studied at Maranhao Federal University. He received his law degree from the Federal University of Maranhão in 1953.
In 1952, he wed Marly Macieira.
Career
After serving as a temporary deputy and then as a federal deputy in 1955, he began his political career in the 1950s. He was appointed governor of the state of Maranho in 1966 and he did so until 1971. He was chosen to lead the National Renewal Alliance (ARENA) after being elected to the Brazilian Senate.
He officially became the first civilian president in 21 years after being elected vice president and acting president following President Neves's death on April 21.
