About Joseph Cornell
Joseph Cornell was a celebrated American film-maker and artist whose art work usually featured box collections created from found objects.
Joseph was born in Nyack, New York to Joseph Cornell, a textiles worker, and Helen Ten Broeck Cornell a nursery teacher.
Career
Before he began his career, Joseph would arrange a varied piece of photographic works, in a way that joins old pieces together with a touch of Surrealism. Many of his boxes, including the popular Medici Slot Machine boxes, are still viable and interactive even after a long time.
In December 1936, Joseph premiered the "Rose Hobart" film at the Julien Levy Gallery, during the first Surrealist exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
Joseph's films were often centered on collages of found short films, his later ones were medleyed footage he extensively acquired from filmmakers he worked with in the industry. These films were usually set in some of Joseph’s favorite neighborhoods and places such as Bryant Mulberry Street Park, New York City, , Union Square Park, and many others
Joseph continued to explore photography and filmmaking until his death in 1972.
