Best known for being a defender of monarchy and the altar, the French Savoyard lawyer and philosopher authored a number of works, most famous among them “Soirées de Saint-Petersburg”, which was posthumously published.

Born at Chambéry in the Duchy of Savoy, he studied law at the University of Turin and rose through the ranks to become a magistrate and a member of the Savoy Senate in 1787.
