About Joseph Fourier
Joseph Fourier was an 18th-century mathematics genius from France. In his early teens, he was interested in literature but suddenly switched to mathematics from his mid-teens. He was even awarded first prize for completing six books of Bézout's Cours de mathématiques. Somewhere in 1787, he decided to join the seminary but declined his decision two years later.
In 1790, he taught mathematics at the Benedictine college. Fourier has been recognized for expanding the theories of Fourier analysis, harmonic analysis, as well as discovering the greenhouse effect. His works include “Théorie analytique de la chaleur”, and “Mémoire d'analyse sur le mouvement de la chaleur dans les fluids”.
Education
He was educated at the Pallais's school, École Royale Militaire, St Benoit-sur-Loire, and École Normale Supérieure.
Family
He was born to Joseph Fourier and Edmée Germaine Lebègue. He had 14 siblings including three half-siblings.
Trivia
His real name was Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier.
He was one of the founding members of the Cairo Institute.
Fourier served as a scientific adviser to Napoleon in 1798.
