About Joseph-Louis Lagrange
Joseph-Louis Lagrange’s initial plan was to become a lawyer, and had little interest in mathematics. He began developing a love for the subject in 1693 when he came across a paper by English Mathematician Edmond Halley.
Sooner than later, the Italian-born astronomer and mathematician became one of the popular names in the field. He was known to be the founder of the theory dubbed ‘calculus of variations’. He also contributed to other fields including celestial mechanics, Mathematical analysis, and number theory.
Private Life
His father, Giuseppe Francesco Lodovico, was a lecturer at the University of Torino.
Education
He enjoyed classical Latin during his days at University of Turin.
Honors
Lagrange was made a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1808. Five years later, he received the Grand Croix of the Ordre Impérial de la Réunion. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Trivia
The Prussian Academy of Sciences appointed him as one of their directors in 1766.
He was influenced by Évariste Galois.
He trained other prominent mathematicians like Joseph Fourier, Siméon Poisson, and Giovanni Plana.
