About Joseph Merrick
Joseph Merrick was an English man with deformities, best known as the Elephant Man. At the age of 13, he left home, because his father and his stepmother rejected him. His skin was thick and his lips were enormous. A big bone grew on his forehead, while both of his feet and one arm were enlarged. In 1884, he contacted a show manager and he insisted that he should exhibit him all around Europe, which he did.
His Death
He had to sleep sitting up because of the weight of his head, but he tried to sleep lying down, in order to "be like other people". He died of a dislocated neck at the age of 27.
Fun Facts
Anthony Hopkins and Bradley Cooper have portrayed him in cinema and on stage.
