About Joseph Mitchell
Joseph Mitchell’s incomplete training in journalism (because he dropped out of college) still came in handy when he found work as a newspaper reporter in 1929 in New York City. After he was hired to write for the weekly magazine, “The New Yorker” in 1938, he began his successful career as a creative nonfiction writer through his vivid stories about events and people, mostly influenced by his life in New York City. “Mr. Hunter’s Grave”, “Up in the Old Hotel” and “Joe Gould’s Secret” are amongst his most popular features.
Family Life
He was born to Elizabeth Amanda Parker and Averette Nance Mitchell. He was the eldest of six siblings. For almost five decades (1932 to 1980), he was married to Therese Jacobsen. They had two daughters together.
Legacy
He has been described by literary critics as a writer who generations of writers of nonfiction have looked up to.
Death
After battling with lung cancer, which was diagnosed in 1995, he passed away in May 1996 at 87 years old.
