About Joseph Muscat
Dr. Joseph Muscat is a Maltese public official who served as Prime Minister of Malta from 2013 to 2020 and as Labor Party leader from June 2008 to January 2020.
Family and Background
As an only child, Dr. Muscat was born on the 22nd January, 1974 to the Burmarrad family in Pieta, Malta.
From the University of Malta, he earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Management and Public Policy, a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Public Policy, and a Master of Arts in European Studies. He received his Doctorate of Philosophy in Management Research from the University of Bristol in 2007.
He tied the knot with Michelle Muscat (née Tanti), with whom he has twin daughters, Etoile Ella and Soleil Sophie.
Career
He worked as a journalist and subsequently assistant chief of news for a private radio station from 1992 to 1997.
At age 21, he was elected to the National Executive of the Partit Laburista and later nominated as the Party's Education Secretary.
He served on the National Commission for Fiscal Morality from 1997 to 1998. In 2004, he ran successfully in Malta's first European Parliamentary elections.
Achievements
As an MEP, he advocated for tax reduction for satellite television, the right to watch various sports events for free, and a variety of environmental issues in Malta.
In 2006, he was named Outstanding Young Person of the Year.
