About Joseph Scriven
The Irish-born composer wrote the poem “Pray Without Ceasing” in 1855 to comfort his mother during her illness. His poem was later transformed to the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” by American composer Charles Crozat Converse. He also produced the collection “115 Hymns” which was published in 1869.
Family
He was the son of Jane Medlicott and Captain John Scriven of the Royal Marines.
Education
Scriven studied at Trinity College, Dublin.
Death
He drowned in 1886 when he was 66 years old. There were some rumors that he committed suicide owing to a severe depression that had gripped him in his later life.
