About Joseph Stilwell
Joseph Warren Stilwell, affectionately called "Vinegar Joe", was a renowned Army General in the United States who served in World War II. He held commands such as the 7th Infantry Division and the Western Defense Command. Stilwell also fought in the Burma Campaign and the Philippine-American War.
Early Life and Education
Regardless of Stilwell's stubborn nature, he was an excellent student. He was the son of Dr. Benjamin Stilwell and Mary A. Peene. The Army General enrolled in Yonkers High School and performed excellently. Although his true passion was to attend Yale University, his strict father enrolled him in the US Military Academy, and he graduated in 1904.
Career Highlights
Stilwell started to serve at the US legation in Beijing from 1935 to 1939. He was assistant commander of the Second Infantry Division from 1939 to 1940. In 1942 Stilwell was promoted to Lieutenant-General and assigned to the China-India Theatre during World War II, where he served in three primary roles. Stilwell's fight in China was extensive and saw a very high mortality rate on both sides.
Death
Joseph Stilwell died in 1946 due to a prolonged battle with stomach cancer.
Awards and Achievements
Some of Stilwell's achievements were the Distinguished Service Cross, Legion of Merit, and a Bronze Star Medal.
