About Josephine Lovett
Her heroines were independent and elegant women. This female screenwriter was not afraid to defy the stereotype of women in the film industry.
Early Life
Lovett was born on October 21, 1877, in San Francisco. She started as a stage actress after moving to New York in 1899.
Career
The screenwriter always loved writing, but she decided to take it on professionally when she saw how actresses were typecast. Her first script was the 1916 film “The Ninety and Nine”. She was daring with her characters but did not take it too far; they were just enough to appease censorship and captivate the female audience.
Lovett’s most notable film is the Academy Award-nominated film “Our Dancing Daughters”, starring Joan Crawford. The film was considered to be too racy by critics. Some of her other writing credits are “Tess of the Storm Country”, “Annie Laurie”, “The Road to Reno”, and “Captain Hurricane” (which was her last film).
Personal Life
Josephine Lovett was married to film director John S. Robertson. The couple worked together on a number of films. Out of thirty-five films credited to Lovett, Robertson directed eighteen.
