About Josh White
Frequently given credit for introducing white audiences to blues, spirituals, and African folk music in the 1940s, Josh White is a well-known folk singer, guitarist, and actor. The American is known for his country blue songs that denounce social injustice.
Career
While guiding blind blues performers in the rural South, he picked up the blues guitar. He joined Joe Taggart for his first recording in 1928.
"One Meat Ball" and "Uncle Sam Says"were some of his better-known recordings. He played at the 1941 and 1945 inaugurations of American President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
He acted alongside Ella Raines and Edgar Buchanan in the 1949 western "The Walking Hills."
Posthumous Acknowledgement
In 1970, Leatrice Emeruwa released the poem "Josh White Is Dead" in his memory.
Josh White Day was proclaimed on August 20, 2016, in Greenville.
