About Joycelyn Elders
Joycelyn Elders is best recognized for her service to the government of the United States as the 15th Surgeon General (from September 1993 to December 1994). The pediatrician and public health administrator had previously served in the United States Army, completed a residency in pediatrics and worked as the Director of the Arkansas Department of Health. Due to her support for controversial topics such as contraception distribution in schools, masturbation and drug legalization, she was forced to resign from office as Surgeon General.
Family Life
She was raised as the first of eight children born in a sharecropping family in Arkansas. Her two marriages, to Cornelius Reynolds and then to a basketball coach named Oliver Elders ended in divorce.
Achievements
She has been the recipient of a Candace Award and the National Institutes of Health’s career development award.
Trivia
She has been a professor emerita at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
