About Juan Carlos I of Spain
Juan Carlos I of Spain is a member of the House of Borbón, who ruled as the King of Spain between 1975 and 2014. He ascended the throne a couple of days after the death of Spanish military general, Francisco Franco. He’s widely considered as one of the pillars in Spain’s smooth transition to the democratic type of governance.
Family
His full name is Juan Carlos Alfonso Víctor María de Borbón y Borbón. His grandfather, Alfonso XIII, was the King of Spain from 1886 to 1931. He was born to Infante Juan and Princess María de las Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.
He lost his brother, Alfonso, in 1956 after he was accidentally shot. He has two sisters namely Infanta Margarita, Duchess of Soria, and Infanta Pilar, Duchess of Badajoz.
In 1962, he got married to Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark and together they have three children called Infanta Elena, Infanta Cristina, and King Felipe VI of Spain.
Trivia
He and his parents went into exile in Rome during the 1939 civil war.
