About Juan Gris
Born José Victoriano González-Pérez but popularly called Juan Gris, was a brilliant Spanish painter of the 20th century. Gris is widely known for his innovative and lucid works of art, which constitute the bulk of the artistic genre of “Cubism.”
Background & Early Life
The painter was born and raised in Madrid, Spain.
During his adolescence, he studied painting with the celebrated academic artist José Moreno Carbonero. He adopted his craft name Juan Gris in 1905. He enrolled in Madrid’s School of Arts and Sciences and studied engineering.
Career
In 1906, he relocated to Paris, where he met his compatriot Picasso Pablo. Picasso introduced him to the evolution of “Cubism.” He then abandoned satirical cartoons and adopted his style of Cubism in 1911. His first exhibition was in 1912 at the Salon des Indépendants. The same year, he participated in one of the world’s first group exhibitions on Cubism, “Exposició d’art cubista, Galeries Dalmau.”
He developed a synthetic approach to Cubism, “Crystal Cubism,” that produced works that earned him enormous critical acclaim.
Trivia
His 1915 painting, “Nature morte à la nappe à carreaux” was auctioned for $57.1 million.
Death
He died at age 40 on 11 May 1927, after battling cardiac diseases and suffering kidney damage.
