About Juan Manuel Santos
After working with a number of business organizations, Juan Manuel Santos was appointed as Columbia’s Minister for Foreign Trade in 1991 which made him the first person to hold that position. Then a member of the Liberal Party, the Bogotá-born politician served as the Minister for Finance and Public Credit between 2000 and 2002.
In 2005, Santos joined the Social Party of National Unity and was named as the Minister for National Defence the following year. In 2010, he was sworn-in as the President of the country. He was best known for his negotiation with the FARC group which helped to restore peace in the country.
Family
He’s the son of Clemencia Calderón Nieto and Enrique Santos Castillo. The famous statesman’s three brothers were named Enrique, Felipe and Luis Fernando. He divorced Silvia Amaya Londoño before marrying María Clemencia Rodríguez Múnera in 1987.
Education
He has studied at a number of institutions including Tufts University, the University of Kansas and Harvard University.
Honors
He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016.
Facts
Before joining politics, he worked with a number of organizations including El Tiempo, which was then managed by his family and the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia.
He became a prominent figure during the reign of Álvaro Uribe Vélez.
