About Juan Pablo Duarte
Juan Pablo Duarte was one of the most celebrated figures in the history of the Dominican Republic. He was a nationalist politician, military leader, and activist and is widely remembered as the “father of Dominican independence.”
Background & Education
He was born in Santo Domingo, Captaincy General of Santo Domingo. In 1819, he was educated in Manuel Aybar’s educational institution, where he studied writing, reading, arithmetic, and grammar. He also studied law, philosophy, and Latin under Dr. Juan Vicente Moscoso. In addition, he was sent to Europe and the USA for education between 1828 and 1833.
Political Career
He returned to the Dominican Islands in 1833 and became very interested in patriotism and liberalism. Together with other patriots, they formed the secret society, “La Trinitaria.”
In 1843, he played an active role in the “Reformists Revolution” to oust the dictatorship of Haitian revolution leader Jean Pierre Boyer. In addition, he was the primary financier of the “Dominican War of Independence,” which ultimately led to the declaration of “Dominican Independence” in 1844.
However, following his disagreement with the military general Pedro Santana and the “royalist” and “pro-annexation” sections in the nation, he was sent to exile shortly after the independence.
Death
He died at age 63 in 1876 while in exile in Caracas, Venezuela.
