About Juan Ramón Jiménez
Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez was globally admired for popularizing the "pure poetry" concept. He started attracting interest with his numerous erotic poems in 1911. Three years later, he published arguably his most popular poem titled “Platero y yo (Platero and I)”.
His other well-known works were “Second Poetic Anthology (Segunda antología poética)” and “Voices of my Verse (Voces de mi copla)”.
Family
He lost his father in 1900, the same year he published his first book. He was married to fellow poet Zenobia Camprubí.
Education
The Spaniard studied at a San Luis Gonzaga-based Jesuit institution.
Recognition
In 1956, this poet was honored with the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Trivia
He sought refuge in Puerto Rico during the infamous Spanish Civil War.
Jiménez also worked as a lecturer and taught in institutions like the University of Puerto Rico, and the University of Miami.
His work “Platero and I” was adapted into a film with a similar name in 1968. The movie was directed by Alfredo Castellón.
