About Juanita Brooks
A historian with international repute, Juanita Brooks is known for her accurate documentation of American and Mormon history such as the Mountain Meadows Massacre where 120 emigrants were attacked and murdered by Mormon settlers.
Background
Granddaughter of Mormon pioneer Dudley Leavitt, Brooks developed an interest in history as a young girl. When she was 21, she tied the knot with Ernest Pulsipher. Following the death of her husband, she decided to get a degree from Brigham Young University.
Career
In 1947, Brooks started researching her grandfather Dudley Leavitt. The historian discovered diaries of early Utah settlers. Her book “Uncle Will Tells His Story” was a result of her research. The research also led her to study and write about the Mormon's dark past in which her grandfather was involved in the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857. Although she was not officially punished by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the book, she was shunned by the community.
Brooks penned other books, including “Dudley Leavitt: Pioneer to Southern Utah”, and “Quicksand and Cactus: A Memoir of the Southern Mormon frontier”.
