About Judith Jamison
The Pennsylvania native is credited as the first African-American woman to become the artistic director of a major modern dance company. She holds the 50th Hall of Fame position at the National Museum of Dance.
Career Highs
In 1965, she became a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and quickly ascended to national fame. Amongst her most notable roles was the tour-de-force solo, “Cry.” She starred with Gregory Hines in the hit Broadway revue, “Sophisticated Ladies.” Her international success came through her performances with numerous ballet companies all over the world.
Awards
She is a recipient of both a Primetime Emmy Award and an American Choreography Award.
Trivia
She danced with choreographer, Mikhail Baryshniov, in Ailey's 1976, “Pax de Duke.”
