About Jules Francois Archibald
He was an Australian icon who worked as a publisher and journalist and was known to have been one the owners of ‘The Bulletin’.
Personal Life
Even though he was known as Jules Francois, that was not the name he was given at birth. When he was born, his parents who were from a very catholic family chose the name John Feltham Archibald for him but his love of the French language and everything it stood for made him change his name later. It is even believed that he pretended his mother was French-Jewish.
Career
He worked in different capacities growing up. He was a journalist and accountant with the Daily Telegraph in Melbourne then he worked as a miner and a public servant. Later, he moved to Sydney where he met William Macleod and John Hayes and together, they started a weekly newspaper named ‘The Bulletin’.
He later travelled but when he got back, he realized things were not going well with the business so he bought it from his friends and became the main owner. With his hard work and dedication, the business began to thrive. He again started another literary work when he released ‘The Lone Hand’ which was a monthly newspaper even though at the time, his health had begun to fail him.
Death
He ended up in Callan Park Hospital for the Insane after he passed out and continued writing there but in 1919, he passed away.
Achievements
He is known to have been the creator of the Archibald Prize for Art, which is now highly recognized in Australia.
