About Julia Dent Grant
She is best recognized as the granddaughter of former President Ulysses Grant and the former spouse of the late Prince Michael Cantacuzene, who oversaw the last regiment at Kiev during the Russian Revolution. However, Julia Dent Grant was not more than just Countess Speransky and Princess Cantacuzène. The Washington, D.C.-born an acclaimed writer and historian who provided first-person recollections of the events leading up to the Russian Revolution in 1917.
Personal Life
She was born in the White House, named after her grandmother, then-First Lady of the United States, Julia Grant, and was the first child of Maj. Gen. Frederick Dent Grant and his spouse Ida Marie Honoré.
She met Prince Michael Cantacuzene, a lieutenant in the Russian guard’s cavalry, while in Cannes, and they married on September 25, 1899, in Newport, Rhode Island. Regrettably, they split up in 1934. They had three children – Zenaida, Bertha, and Michael.
Career
She contributed frequently to journals and newspapers, occasionally on general subjects. "Revolutionary Days: Recollections of Romanoffs and Bolshevik," (1914-1917) "Russian People: Revolutionary Recollections," (1919) and "My Life Here and There" were her three major publications.
Later, she established the Sulgrave Club, an exclusive club for women, where she frequently had lunch until 1970.
She passed away in 1975, aged 99.
