About Junípero Serra
Junípero Serra was a Catholic missionary and priest celebrated for creating a number of Franciscan Missions in the United States, specifically in California. He joined the Franciscan Order in 1730 and was initially stationed at the Friars Minor branch.
For his ability to follow the teachings of the church and serve in different capacities, the Spaniard was ordained a priest in 1737 and was given the mandate to teach at the famous Convento de San Francisco.
He started his missionary work in 1749 when he led a group of missionaries to Veracruz in modern-day Mexico. As part of his works, he helped to establish Sierra Gorda’s Franciscan Missions, which as of November 2021, was listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. He went on to establish nine missions in the state of California.
Family
At birth he was named Miquel Josep Serra i Ferrer. He was an offspring of Margarita Rosa Ferrer and Antonio Nadal Serra.
Honors
He was beatified in 1988 by then leader of the church, Pope John Paul II. In 2015, he was canonized by Pope Francis.
Trivia
A statue has been erected at the United States Capitol's National Statuary Hall Collection in his honor.
