About Karl Carstens
West Germany's position in post-World War II (WWII) Europe was shaped by German politician Karl Carstens, who led the country from 1979 until 1984, serving as West Germany's fifth Federal President.
Career
In WWII, he was a member of an army anti-aircraft unit. Following the war, he practiced law in his hometown of Bremen and, starting in 1949, served as a senatorial councilor. In 1966, he began his tenure as secretary of state in the Ministry of Defence under Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger's grand coalition administration. After 1968, he was appointed chairman of the German Chancellery.
He was elected to the Bundestag in 1972 and served as a member until 1979. He served as the CDU/CSU parliamentary group's chairman (1973-1976).
He was sworn into office as the fifth president of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1979. Despite opposition to his selection as president due to his Nazi connection, he was a successful and ended up being a well-liked head of state. He left office after his term was up in 1984.
His Life
At universities in Frankfurt, Munich, Königsberg, and Hamburg, he studied political science and law. He also got an LL.M. from Yale Law School in 1949. He married Veronica Prior, a medical student.
