About Karl Pearson
After establishing the University College’s statistics department in 1911, Karl Pearson became the first person in the world to accomplish this feat. The English mathematician also helped to develop other statistical methods like the “Correlation coefficient” and “Method of moments”.
Other concepts such as the “Pearson's system of continuous curves” and the “Pearson's chi-squared test” were named after him.
As an author
As part of his contributions, the renowned mathematician published quite a number of books which included “The Scope and Importance to the State of the Science of National Eugenics” and “The Grammar of Science”.
Family
His father William Pearson was a lawyer. His mother was called Fanny Smith and was raised together with two siblings named Amy and Arthur. He had three children with Maria Sharpe named Egon Pearson, Sigrid Loetitia Pearson and Helga Sharpe Pearson.
Education
He graduated from King's College, Cambridge in 1879. Before that, he studied at the University College School.
Awards
In 1912, he was honored with the Weldon Memorial Prize. Pearson was also a recipient of the Darwin Medal.
Trivia
He studied under Sir Francis Galton.
This renowned mathematician edited William Kingdon Clifford’s 1885 work titled “Common Sense of the Exact Sciences”.
