Karlheinz Stockhausen was a famous German composer, widely regarded as one of the most important composers in the history of world music. In addition, he is widely known for his groundbreaking research and works in electronic music, which introduced aleatory techniques for spatial music and spatial composition.
Background & Education
He was born in Burg Mödrath, Germany. Between 1947 and 1951, he read philosophy, German studies, and musicology at the University of Cologne and music pedagogy at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. However, he became interested in composition in 1950, when he attended the class of renowned composer Frank Martin. He also studied information theory, acoustics, and phonetics at the University of Bonn.
Music Career Highlights
In the early 1950s, he began his exploration of the usage of tape recorders to investigate various sounds. The composer developed several methods of changing musical sounds through the complex manipulation of its sine waves. He then set out to create new radical approaches to the fundamental elements of music.
His composition "Studie I (1953)" was the first-ever musical piece composed of sine-wave sounds. Additionally, "Studie II (1954)" was the first electronic music work published and noted.
Stockhausen's musical views were compiled and released in several publications, including "Stockhausen on Music (1989)."
Death
He died at age 79 on December 5, 2007, after he suffered heart failure.
