About Käthe Kollwitz
Käthe Kollwitz was a renowned German artist whose works were mostly on human conditions during and after wars. Though she was believed to be a student of the realism school of thought, most of her works were said to be in line with the expressionism movement.
Some of her popular works were named “Death Struggles with a Woman”, “Whetting the Scythe” and “The Young Couple”.
Family
She was born Käthe Schmidt to Karl and Katherina Schmidt. She had a brother called Benjamin. In 1891, she became the wife of Karl Kollwitz. The couple were blessed with two kids which included German epidemiologist, Hans Kollwitz.
Education
She was trained at the Women's Art School in Munich.
Decorations
Kollwitz was a recipient of the Pour Le Mérite accolade in 1929.
Fun Facts
Her 150th anniversary was marked by Google Doodle in 2017.
She was inspired by the play “The Weavers”.
