About Kelly Holmes
During her active days, British athlete Kelly Holmes was a force to reckon with in the 800-meters and 1,500-meters events. Though she began her career during her days in high school, the Pembury-born runner became a full-time athlete in the early 1990s.
She won her first notable laurel in 1994 when she was awarded a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. The following year, she won a silver medal at the World Championships. Holmes became a global icon in 2004 when she earned her first Olympic gold medal. She ended the Games with a total of three medals: two gold and a bronze.
Post retirements
The renowned athlete has worked on other projects since announcing her retirement in 2005. Four years later, she was appointed as the Commonwealth Games England’s president. In 2014, she commissioned a community hub and cafe in Hildenborough known as ‘Cafe 1809’.
Family
Her parents are Pam Norman and Derrick Holmes, who worked as a car mechanic. In a 2022 interview, she disclosed that she was gay.
Education
She attended Hugh Christie Comprehensive School.
Honors
In 2005, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Five years later, she became a member of the England Athletics Hall of Fame.
Trivia
She established the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust in 2008.
At age 18, she became a member of the British Army.
Holmes has appeared on loads of television shows including ITV’s “Bear Grylls: Mission Survive” and “Studio One” which was first aired on the Dubai One TV channel.
