He is noted to have headlined over 15 main events in UFC and Pride FC and some other pay-per-view records. During the early days of his career, ABC News named him "The World's Most Dangerous Man".

He was born to Richard Kilpatrick who was a member of the United States Air Force. His mom, Diane Kilpatrick, worked as a dancer and waitress.
He got married to Tina Ramirez and they divorced in 2002. They have four children, Ryan, Conner, Sean, and Fallon.
In 2005, he got married to Tonya in 2005, becoming the stepfather to Tonya’s children.
