About Ken Shimura
Ken Shimura was a legendary Japanese comedian and television personality whose career took off in the early 1970s. He is best known for his participation in a 1970s/80s variety show called “Hachiji Da Yo! Zen'in Shugo!” and later in the 1990s with his role on “Kato-chan Ken-chan Gokigen Terebi”.
He was formerly part of a popular Japanese comedy/musical troupe called The Drifters.
Shimura was active in the entertainment industry from 1975 'til 2014.
He was recognized as the professional mentor of another Japanese celebrity, Masashi Tashiro.
Death
Shortly before his death he was hospitalized with a case of severe pneumonia, in addition to being diagnosed with coronavirus.
Shimura became the first major Japanese celebrity to have been identified as having coronavirus. He passed away on the 29th of March, 2020 – he was 70-years-old.
Trivia
At the time of his death, he was slated to be one of the torchbearers of the Olympic torch, with the Summer Olympics originally being planned to be held in Japan in 2020.
