About Ken Thompson
In 1966, after his computer training, Ken Thompson joined the Bell Labs company. The American computer scientist’s first notable work was the creation of an operating system (OS) known as ‘Multics’, alongside Dennis Ritchie. The two also combined to develop another OS called ‘Unix’.
He moved to technology giants Google in 2006 where he helped to create a programming language which is referred to as ‘Go’.
Personal Life
His son with Bonnie is called Cory.
Education
Thompson attended the University of California, Berkeley where he read computer science and electrical engineering.
Awards
He was a co-recipient of the Turing Award in 1983. Seven years later, he was honored with the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal. Other laurels that he has received include the Tsutomu Kanai Award, and the National Medal of Technology.
Trivia
He has been credited for working on the famous programming language called ‘B’.
Thompson also played a key role in the creation of the Belle chess machine.
