About Kimia Alizadeh
She is an Iranian athlete who specializes in taekwondo. She gained international renown by winning a medal for her country at the 2016 Summer Olympics. And she increased in popularity when she opted to defect from Iran in 2020.
Her father’s name is Keyvan Alizadeh Zonoozi, and her mother is Afsaneh Najafzadeh. She also has a brother by the name of Kian Alizadeh Zonoozi. And her husband, whom she married in 2018, is Hamed Madanchi.
She took home the gold medal at the 2014 Youth Olympics.
In 2017, at the World Taekwondo Championships, she won a silver medal.
In 2016, at the age of 18 years, she became the first woman to ever win an Olympic medal for Iran. She did so in Taekwondo.
She defected from Iran in early January 2020, opting to instead reside in Europe.
She did so to protest the treatment of women in her country. Her particular gripe is the way they are controlled, with Kimia Alizadeh citing herself as an example.
Seyed Mohammad Pouledgar, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Taekwondo Federation at the time of her defection, said that she did so under the pretense of traveling. He further went on to state that the government of Iran actually paid for her trip.
Despite defecting, she has proclaimed to ‘remain a daughter of Iran wherever she is’.
She made this decision amidst her home country being gripped by anti-government protests, accidentally shooting down a passenger plane from Ukraine a few days prior and having a notable quarrel with the United States in recent weeks.
She is 1.85 m (approximately 6’ 1”) in height.
