About Kumar Sangakkara
After catching the eyes of many cricket lovers with his performances in high school, Kumar Sangakkara was selected to join the Sri Lankan A cricket squad in 1998–99 for their tour to South Africa. He played in his first Test in 2000 at age 22.
In 2009, he was made the captain of the Sri Lankan national team, taking over from Mahela Jayawardene.
He represented his country in a number of tournaments such as the Cricket World Cup, and ICC World Twenty20. He ended his career as the country’s greatest batsman with the highest Test runs.
At club level, he played for many teams including Nondescripts, Jamaica Tallawahs, and Dhaka Dynamites.
After retirement
After ending his playing career, Sangakkara has also explored other businesses. In 2015, he was appointed as the ambassador of his country’s Anti-narcotics program. He has also worked as a commentator for a number of media organizations like SkySports, and ICC TV.
In January 2021, he was hired by Rajasthan Royals as its Director of cricket.
Family
He spent his early years with his parents and three siblings. His father was called Swarnakumara Sangakkara. He has a set of twins with Yehali Sangakkara whom he married in 2003.
Achievements
He was ushered into the prestigious ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2021, making him the second person from his country to achieve this feat.
