About Kurt Elling
Seeing his father work as a Kapellmeister, Kurt Elling fell in love with music and decided to pursue a career in it. Before going into full-time singing, the American entertainer performed at clubs and weddings.
He started recording songs in 1995 and was signed onto the Blue Note label later that year. With this partnership, he released his first studio album dubbed “Close Your Eyes” which would be nominated for a Grammy Award in 1995.
By the end of 2021, Elling had recorded not less than ten albums with some titled “This Time It's Love” and “Nightmoves”.
Collaborations
Aside from his personal projects, he has also teamed up with many famous musicians including Oscar Brown Jr., David Amram, and Jon Hendricks. He also performed with Laurence Hobgood, and Kendrick Scott in a band.
Family
He was born to Martha and Henry Elling. He has been married to Jennifer Carney, a dancer, since 1996. They welcomed their child Luiza in 2005.
Education
The singer started his education at Rockford-based St. Paul Lutheran School. He continued at Rockford Lutheran High School and later joined Gustavus Adolphus College. He’s also a product of the University of Chicago Divinity School.
Accolades
He won his first Grammy Award in 2009. He received another one in 2021 for his album titled “Secrets are the Best Stories”.
Trivia
In 2003, he was voted as the vice-chair of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
During his elementary school days, he played the violin and piano.
