He was born Kyle Hunter Martino. He played soccer at his high school in Westport, Connecticut. He earned the title “Gatorade National Player of the Year”; a yearly award scheme that rewards promising athletic high school students in the U.S.
His university years spanned from 1999 to 2001 at the University of Virginia. During his college days, he attained 17 goals and 21 assists in playing soccer. He earned the title of “ACC Player of the year” in his junior season.

He scored 15 goals for Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer and 2 goals for Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup.

He later became a studio analyst serving as a color commentator for the English Premier League at a popular American TV network NBC Sports. Prior to that, he was the color commentator for ESPN for Major League Soccer.
He hosted “36 hours” on Travel Channel and “Spartan Race” on NBC Sports.
In 2018, he occupied the office of the President of the United States Soccer Foundation.
