About Larry Kramer
Larry Kramer was an American playwright, filmographer, LGBT and AIDS activist whose effectiveness in all of these fields, especially as a writer, led to him winning a number of highly-distinguished awards throughout his career. But what he may be best known for to the general public is his support of the gay community – as he was very active during the time when AIDS first began to spread – and accordingly his efforts in combating the HIV virus and LGBT stigmas.
Family Life
He has an elder brother named Arthur, who played a prominent role in his career.
Achievements
He was one of the first and foremost figures in the early fight against AIDS, co-founding an NGO called the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, which supported many of the first victims of the disease in New York City.
He has won a plethora of awards throughout his career. For instance, in 1996 he won an American Arts and Letters Award in the category of Literature. In 2014 he took home a Primetime Emmy for the small-screen adaptation of his play “The Normal Heart”, which was based on the early 1980s’ AIDS epidemic in NYC. That same play also won a Tony Award in 2011.
It is also interesting to note that in 1993 Kramer was one of the finalists to win a Pulitzer Prize for a play he wrote the year prior entitled “The Destiny of Me”, which did go on to win a couple of Obie Awards.
Trivia
In the early 1950s, as a student of Yale University, he attempted suicide due to the isolation he felt as a homosexual male in the institution during that era.
