Lars von Trier is a celebrated Danish film director and screenwriter regarded as one of the finest Danish film directors of his generation. He is known for films such as 1984's The Element of Crime, 1996's Breaking the Waves and 2003's Dogville.
Personal Life
His first marriage was to Cæcilia Holbek. The marriage lasted from 1987 to 1995 and produced two children. In 1997, he married his second wife Bente Frøge.
Trivia
He suffers from a serious fear of flying which forces him to shoot majority of his films in Denmark or neighboring Sweden.
Prior to his mother's death in 1989, she shocked him by revealing that the man he knew as his father was really not his biological father.
In 2011, he was kicked out of the Cannes Film Festival after telling journalists that he sympathized with Adolf Hitler and went on to jokingly add that he himself was a Nazi.
